◊◊◊ Malcolm: Featured name ◊◊◊

Malcolm
Gender: M
Origin of Malcolm: Scottish
Meaning of Malcolm: "devotee of St. Colomba"
Malcolm's Popularity in 2009: #602

"Malcolm is a warm and welcoming Scottish appellation that fits into that golden circle of names that are distinctive but not odd. A royal name in Scotland, Malcolm is also a hero name for many via radical civil rights activist Malcolm X. "

"From Scottish Máel Coluim which means "disciple of Saint COLUMBA". This was the name of four kings of Scotland starting in the 10th century, including Malcolm III, who became king after killing Macbeth, the usurper who had murdered his father. The character Malcolm in Shakespeare's tragedy 'Macbeth' (1606) is based on him. Another famous bearer was Malcolm X (1925-1965), an American civil rights leader."

"Gaelic name meaning "follower or devotee of the dove", where the dove is usually St. Columba.
It was a popular name among Scottish nobility, and the first name of black Muslim Minister and Civil Rights leader Malcolm X."

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse... Cute?

Here is an exact quote from a yahoo answers question, as well as a few answers.

Question:
"Okay so I don't plan on using this as a name but don't you think its cute? Maybe not the meaning.....but it sounds cute for a little girl!

The name is- Pestilence. Beside the meaning for one second doesn't it sound cute for a girl??"
Source 1: Horsemen
Source 2: Pestilence
Answers:
"i dont really like it"

"Sorry, but i don't like it. It reminds of Pesticide."

"Actually kinda. But i wouldnt use it."

"Please rethink. Your child will have to go to school with that name. I think it would be difficult for your child.
I am sure you can find one just as creative but not as negative a meaning."

"I don't even know the meaning so that's good for my answer :P
It's alright. I certainly wouldn't ever use it though."

"Yeah I think it's cute but a bit too 'out there' for my liking, I prefer traditional/common names"

"Sounds like a name I'd give an annoying younger sibling, like a variant of pest."
"No. It sounds like a medication."

"HAHAHA!
Dude, if you try and forget about the meaning for a second, it actually does sort of a little bit sound like a decent name for a little girl. Then you think about disease and bugs and nastiness and then you wander "What the frick was I thinking?" ♥ "

"It does sound cute.
Im glad your not planning on using it though!! Not exactly the best haha!!!
Its funny how horrible meaning words can have lovely sounds though. I think Chlamydia sounds really nice for a girl. OBVIOUSLY i'd never ever dream in a million years of using it. But it sounds cute!
So does Nemesis!"

^note, none of these answers are mine. I omitted my answer, but I'm sure you can guess how I feel about it.

- Flow: 10/9
- Style: 10/9

--- Lillian is a bit too trendy for me, but I like it a ton more than plain Lily. I'm not fond of Ruth either. Now you are wondering why it is here if I dislike both names, but I just can't get over how beautiful they are together. Isaiah David has two names that I don't see often, and I love the feel of it. It doesn't flow as well as its sister, though.

Miracles do exist... and here's proof

I've always wondered about the wacky "names" people decide to use. Here's one that is new on me: Miracle. I just saw it on Y!A, and it is just so... presumptuous to name your child that. How is it going to look when your precious little girl gets older? Dr. Miracle Johnson, Auntie Miracle, Senator Miracle Smith... pretty terrible. Anyways, I looked up the popularity out of curiosity and found:

 Year - Total births in U.S. - U.S. Rank

2009 - 662 - 463
2008 - 644 - 484
2007 - 689 - 461
2006 - 637 - 482
2005 - 650 - 469
2004 - 603 - 485
2003 - 592 - 489
2002 - 523 - 522
2001 - 523 - 515
2000 - 503 - 524
1999 - 429 - 580
1998 - 366 - 633
1997 - 420 - 556
1996 - 287 - 735
1995 - 225 - 863

There were 662 Miracles born in the U.S. in 2009. That is quite a few miracles.

Guide:
♦ First Middle (Poster; Place)
- Flow: Rating out of 10 for how well the names sound together. Example of bad flow: Jude Dean.
- Style: How well the names match each other. Example of bad style: Elizabeth Neveah
- Names: Completely based on my own opinions. Basically just how much I like the names.

-Overall: This will be a rating out of 5 hearts. ♥ ~ average; ♥♥ ~ above average; ♥♥♥ ~ average; ♥♥♥♥ ~ fantastic; ♥♥♥♥♥ ~ Perfect. The reason the rating is so high is that I woudn't nominate a name for NofD unless it was at least average. ◊◊◊ Featured Name: Jessyka ◊◊◊

Definition: Friend; hopeless romantic; cat lover

Nicknames and Alternate forms: Jess, Jessa, Jessie, Jessy, Psycho, Jessi, Jessica, etc.

*faints from light-headedness*

◊◊◊ So, a little more about me and my other pursuits ◊◊◊

Two things I love with a passion: Names and TV shows. I'm considering starting another blog with my TV related nonsense. When I do, I'll post a link to it here and in a couple other places.

I have several other identities on the web, so I'm going to list them so you can find me if you use the site as well. I'll try to put a link to each profile, but I'm not entirely sure it will work if you aren't logged in as me.

Baby Names World {Mishada17}
http://www.parentsconnect.com/me/index

In case you are wondering, Mishada17 is a combination of my two favorite actor's names {when I made it up, anyways, and my favorite number}. I wouldn't try to figure out what the actor's names are, though. I mixed them up pretty well.

More about my upcoming TV blog:

I mostly just plan to write a few reviews as I watch episodes. Nothing fancy, since I'm so new to blogging. I'm sure you are asking why I would want to have two blogs as a new blogger, and the answer is that I've been wanting to do this for a while. I'm sure I'll make plenty of mistakes {I've never been very grammatically correct}, but I still want to try.

Some shows I watch {and will probably review}
Currently Running
Big Bang Theory
Burn Notice
Chuck
Dexter
Modern Family
Merlin
Supernatural
True Blood

Retro Reviews of Cancelled Shows
Angel
Charmed
Dark Angel
Dead Like Me
Firefly
Moonlight
My Name is Earl
New Amsterdam
Pushing Daisies
Roswell
Veronica Mars

I obviously will try to start small, maybe just True Blood, Burn Notice and Modern Family for now. I hope my reader {hopefully I will have a reader eventually} will  also check out my upcoming TV blog.

◊◊◊ Cordelia: Featured name ◊◊◊

Besides Name of the Day {NotD}, I also want to do a Featured Name {F~N}. The NotD is about a combo I found on another site, whereas the F~N is a single name that I love and want to post about. The NotD is a will be more about my opinions, and the F~N will be more about the facts on a name.

◊◊◊ Cordelia ◊◊◊

Pronunciation: (kor DEE lee ah)

Meaning:¹ From Cordeilla, possibly a Celtic name of unknown meaning; Daughter of the Sea, its source is cordis, a Latin name meaning "Heart."; Kind-hearted {Latin}; {Note: clearly a very disputed meaning.} Baby names World attempts to discribe the confusion: "Cordelia is a character in Shakespeare's play "King Lear". The name is of uncertain derivation. Some claim it is from the Welsh name Creiddylad, allegedly meaning 'jewel of the sea', although other reliable sources state there is no evidence for a true Celtic origin. Another theory derives the name from the phrase 'coeur de lion'. It may also be an elaboration of the Latin 'cor' (heart)."

Popularity: Popularity in 2009: Not availiable; Cordelia hasn't been in the top 1000 names since 1950. It peaked in 1880 {that is as far as I can go back} at #204. It has been slowly moving down the list since then.

Associations: Cordelia is a variety of rose. Cordelia is also the name of the truthful, faithful daughter of King Lear in Shakespeare's King Lear. According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Cordeilla was the youngest of the three daughters of King Lear and the only one to remain loyal to her father. When adapting the character for his play 'King Lear' (1606), Shakespeare altered the spelling to Cordelia. Cordelia Gray is a fictional private investigator created by author P.D. James.

◊◊◊ NotD ◊◊◊ 6/30/2010

I've decided one way to keep this blog going is to insitute a 'Name of the Day' or NotD. These names will usually be combinations that I find beautiful/handsome as well as, you know, awesome/amazing. I will pull them from at least one {there may sometimes be a NotD from each source} from three different sources: Baby Names World {BNW}, Baby Name Genie Forums {BNGF}, and the Baby Name section of Yahoo Answers {YA}. I will try to remember to post where I found the name and give them credit. Also, I will try not to cheat; I will only pick names were the names aren't favorites of mine.

Since this is the first one, here is the guide to my craziness:
♦ First Middle (Poster; Place)
- Flow: Rating out of 10 for how well the names sound together. Example of bad flow: Jude Dean.
- Style: How well the names match each other. Example of bad style: Elizabeth Neveah
- Names: Completely based on my own opinions. Basically just how much I like the names.

- Flow - 10
- Style - 9
- Names - 9
--- love Sabrina, but Lisette is just okay.
- Overall - ♥♥♥♥
--- it only gets 4 hearts because even though I love how the names work together, and I love Sabrina, Lisette is really only a 6/10 name.

◊◊◊ Names I used to like before I became a name addict ◊◊◊

Abigail - I despise the nickname Abby. I considered using it to honor my mom because it is similar to her middle name.
Bianca - It is okay, but I really don't think it fits my style anymore.
Claire - I always thought it was gorgeous. I wouldn't use it now, I'm just too used to it.
Chloe - Still like this one, but I don't think I'd use it.
Hadley - I liked this before I saw 'True Blood,' but that made me like it more.
Hailey - I remember writing a character named Hailey Arrows in a short story.
Isabella - Not something I'd want to use post-Twilight.
Jo - I thought this made a cute middle name. Not my style anymore.
Jordan - I loved Jordan on 'Scrubs.' I had no idea how masculine it used to be.
Morgan - Can you believe that I thought it was a pretty name? Pretty?
Makenna - I was obsessed with the nn 'Mac' for a while because of 'Veronica Mars'
Skye - Now it is one of the names I hate seeing.
Skylar - I have a friend named Skylar, and I always though her name was cool. Not so much anymore.

Notice there aren't any boy's names? That's because it took me a while to get into them, and by then I had developted slightly better taste.

Notes:
¹If a name has different meanings of different sites I will list them all.
²I will put down any nickname that I think is feasable since nicknames vary so much. It would be nearly impossible to list every possible nickname. Feel free to suggest more in the comments.
³These, of course, are my opinion only. If you suggest more combinations I will add them.

Introduction

Hi, I'm Heather Elaine, welcome to my blog. I'm new at this so please be kind. I've been obsessed with names since January 2010, though they were on my mind a long time before that. No, I'm not interested in having a child, I just love names. I do eventually want a family {in a decade or so}, so I guess you can say I'm getting the research out of the way.
